FAQ
Physie is a great way to keep fit! The variety offered in lessons keeps the girls interested & enthusiastic all year long – combining ballet, jazz, contemporary, hip hop & acro skills into 5 routines. The physie syllabus is age-appropriate, set to popular music tracks & designed to develop:
- Good posture
- Fitness
- Flexibility and strength
- Balance and co-ordination
- Discipline
Most of all, physie classes are FUN!
When can I start?
You can start physie at any time throughout the year. However, in term 1 all our dancers will be learning new routines for the year & joining in from the very start gives you the best chance of absorbing the choreography. If you do join in later in the year we will do our very best to progress your learning & to get you up to speed with the rest of the class! All members receive access to the routines online & we encourage practicing at home.
Our season starts in February so please reach out to us HERE so we can put you on our contact lists for the upcoming season.
Where are the classes held?
Our Monday & Wednesday classes are held at Elanora State High School Student Centre Hall. Entry is via the driveway from Nineteenth Ave & there is plenty of parking. Our Saturday classes are held at Mudgeeraba State School hall on Old Coach Road in Mudgeeraba.
How old does my daughter need to be to join physie?
We teach girls from 3 years old. Our 3-4 year class include lots of wiggly hips, ballerina twirls & nursery rhyme style movement! Basic physie techniques are started including posture, pointed feet & positions. Our 3-4 year class is high energy and super fun! From 5 years the BJP physie syllabus is introduced & there is a greater focus on positions and technique – of course classes are still energetic and lots of fun!
Is physie also for ladies of all ages?
Absolutely! We have an excellent ladies class with ladies in their 20’s right through to their 60’s. Whether you did physie as a young girl and want to try it again or are a beginner, come along and have a laugh and get fit in our ladies class! Beginner, Novice and Intermediate ladies receive an extra 15 minutes of dedicated lesson time to cover posture, technique revision and Q&A’s.
Do we attend once or twice a week?
You may attend for only 1 class a week, the second or third class option is up to you & depends on your goals & expectations for the season. All the routines are walked through each lesson so girls that attend once are not disadvantaged. We find lots of girls start classes once a week & end up coming twice as they love it so much!
Are there any other costs throughout the year?
Physie is one of the lowest cost dance sports available. There is no set uniform for class & we do not wear dance shoes. For the team performance, Mermaid physie supplies each girl with their leotard & hair accessories, as well as paying the team entry fee. For the individual champion girl events, one leotard or a tights & top set is required for the year at a cost of around $60-$90. Other optional club merchandise is available to purchase to wear to events if you wish. Your BJP association registration includes your performance entry fees & an instructional video download for practicing at home. There are no hidden costs with physie, it’s great value for the whole family!
What do I wear?
All classes are bare feet. Juniors – 3-4 years to 12 years – wear a leotard, swimmers, bike pants or activewear. This way teachers can ensure correct posture techniques are being used. We have class crop top and bike pants/shorts available for sale for juniors although it is not compulsory. Hair is to be tied back off the face please. Girls 13 years – ladies wear leggings or bike pants and a crop, singlet or t-shirt. Bring along a drink bottle and a smile and you are ready for physie!
May I watch my daughter’s class?
Of course! We believe parents should be able to enjoy seeing their child’s progression. Parents are able to sit at the back of the hall & of course noise must be kept to a minimum to allow for optimum learning.
Are performances compulsory?
- a sense of accomplishment
- improved confidence
- team spirit and camaraderie
- developing and enhancing presentation and performance skills
- meeting new friends
- having lots of fun!
What do you wear for performances?
Only one BJP leotard or ‘performance wear’ (top & tights) is required for the entire year at a cost of around $60-$150. These are purchased through our associations Physie Shop & new styles are released annually. There is a fantastic buy & sell market for second hand leotards & borrowing from friends is also perfectly acceptable. The young competitors have grooming rules in place, their appearance is kept modest and age appropriate with no fake tan or heavy eye make up permitted.
